The Toucan.
The family Ramphastidae includes about 40 different toucan species. They are friendly, cuddly and playful birds. This pattern represents the Toco Toucan, which is the most widely recognized species, with its large black-tipped orangey-yellow bill and a black bodied plumage with a white throat. The bill is no very strong, so it can’t be used for digging or fighting, and they have long narrow tongues up to 15 cms. The bill has serated edges that helps the bird to grip its food. While a toucan bite definitely doen’t feel good – they can put down an uncomfortable amount of pressure, they can’t break the skin an send you to the ER for stitches like a parrot can. Despite the size of the bill, at 20 cms it is very light as it is made of keratin, like human hair. Their relatively small wings mean that they can’t stay airborne for long, and they usually hop between branches using curved toes and sharp claws. They live (for up to 20 years) together in small flocks. They are native to South America & the Caribbean.
